Black Brigadier General in the Oklahoma Air National Guard

Brigadier General Tommy Daniels

Born in 1947 and raised in Guthrie, OK.

Started the first black radio station in Guthrie at the age of 16 while attending high school called KWRW 1490. It was a 110-watt station and he was allowed only an hour a night.

Interviewed celebrities such as James Brown who named him “Soul Brother Number Young” because of his young age.

Was the first Black News Anchor in Oklahoma from 1974 to 1978 on Channel 9.

Enlisted in the Oklahoma Air Guard in 1965 and flew almost 30 missions during his career of over three decades. 

While stationed in Vietnam, started the “Sounds of Soul Radio Station” for Black soldiers to have soul music to listen to.

Worked in several positions in DC and did six tours at the Pentagon. 

Became the first Black Brigadier General in the Oklahoma Air National Guard. 

Was honored the Oklahoma History Center in 2014 where many of his awards can be seen today.

Guthrie Airport has a corridor named after him and also has the Annual General T. Daniels Thanksgiving Community Dinner, which is ran by the local NAACP that has been going on for 24 years now.
